Douglas High gym considered for community center

BAY MINETTE, Ala. — A portion of

the old Douglas High School could be transformed into a community

center for the city of Bay Minette.

During the bimonthly meeting of

Project Safe Neighborhood Thursday, members discussed acquiring the

facility’s gymnasium and adjacent classrooms.

According to Bay Minette Police

Chief Michael Rowland, the Baldwin County Board of Education

intends to demolish the former school that’s located in the Douglas

community , most of which is in disrepair.

“But that gymnasium is newer and

in pretty good shape,” he said at the meeting.

Rowland suggested acquiring the

gym and classrooms and opening a center that could provide office

space for civic organizations.

“We could move our Project Safe

Neighborhood meetings and Operation ROC and have office space for

them, as well as other organizations,” he said. “There are six

offices there.”

Rowland also said the space could

be used to house after-school and tutoring programs and possibly a

North Baldwin County branch of Habitat for Humanity, as well as a

recreation center for the city.

“Lots of different groups could

move over there,” he said.

“I know the Ecumenical Council

was looking for a place,” Bay Minette evangelist Edna Dixon

said.

Rowland pointed out that the

city’s similar proposal approximately five years ago met with

public resistance due to a misunderstanding of the project.

“This is a re-think of the vision

we had,” he said, “with some adjustments.”

Members of Project Safe

Neighborhood agreed to tour the property next week. If it proves

satisfactory, the group will create a proposal that will be

considered at its next meeting in October to then be presented to

the Bay Minette City Council.
