Dr. Percy “Pete” John Howard, a native of Mobile and a resident of Montrose, died Wednesday, Jan. 12, 2011.
He was born Feb. 17, 1929 to Cecile Hunter Morrissette and Alexander Travis Howard Sr.
He attended Old Shell Road School, Barton Academy and Murphy High School. He graduate from the University of Alabama in 1949, George Washington University School of Medicine in 1953 and interned at the Walter Reed Army Medical Center, after which he served with the Army Medical Corps in Japan for two years.
He returned in 1956 and served surgical residences at the University of Alabama in birmingham and Baptist Hospital in Nashville, Tenn. He was a diplomate of the American Board of Surgery and a fellow of the American College of Surgery. He practiced surgery in Mobile, Atmore and retired after 22 years of practice in Fairhope.
He was a member of Dauphin Way United Methodist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Anne Stuart Howard; four children, Jane Howard (Walter) Evans, Cecile Howard (Denson III) Franklin, Travis Albright Howard and Katherine Shannon Howard; three brothers, Robert C. Howard, Alex T. Howard and William E. Howard; two sisters, Cecile Howard Gardner and Marshall Howard Hart; six grandchildren, Julia Franklin, James Franklin, Emily Franklin, Travis Franklin, Walt Evans and Henry Evans; nieces and nephews.
The family would like to thank Dr. Mark Gottlieb, Pat Davis Odyssey Hospice, Amie Dodd and Catherine Meggs.
Visitation begins at 1 p.m. with a memorial service at 2 p.m. Friday, Jan. 14 at Dauphin Way United Methodist Church.
The family requests memorial donations be made to Dauphin Way Methodist Church Meals-on-Wheels program or Thomas Hospital Foundation.
