Dr. Robert Reilly Maginn, 78, of Daphne, died Sunday, Feb. 20, 2011 at home.
He was born in St. Louis, Mo., and lived in Daphne for the past 11 years.
He served as a hospital corpsman in the U.S. Navy and graduated from St. Louis University in 1956 and from the St. Louis University School of Medicine in 1960. He completed post-graduate studies at Harvard Medical School in Boston and Cambridge University, Cambridge, England. He was certified by the American Board of Surgery and was a Fellow, American College of Surgeons.
He was an author, surgeon, adventurer, and sailor. He was co-captain along with his loving wife of 28 years, Elizabeth, of the sailing vessel, Catamaran RED TOO. He wrote novels and short stories and was a prolific story teller, sailboat Captain and Master Gardener. He spent 15 years in the South Pacific as a medical outreach surgeon and eight years as cowboy surgeon in Montana, both spawning a series of stories about his adventures and experiences. He was preceded in death by three brothers, George “Sam” Maginn, Gerald Maginn, and Michael Maginn.
Survivors include his wife, Elizabeth Maginn of Daphne; two sons, Richard L. Maginn of Chicago and R. Reilly (Carol) Maginn III of Austin, Texas; daughter, Mary Susan (Thomas) Van Leunen of Centreville, Va.; two step-children, Francis T. (Lisa) Eckert and Stephen T. Eckert, both of St. Louis, Mo.; sister, Sue (Martin) McCabe of St. Louis; four grandchildren, Julie A. Van Leunen, Diane R. Van Leunen, Thomas P. Van Leunen III and Ty Eckert; many other family and friends.
A Celebration of Life service will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 24 at the Audubon Park Apartments, 8160 County Road 64, in the Main Building. A special time of sharing will take place at 7 p.m.
A memorial service will be held in St. Louis at a later date.
