LOXLEY, Ala. — There were two serious traffic accidents along Interstate 10 this weekend, state police reported.

The first crash, which happened at 1:30 a.m. Saturday morning, between the Malbis Exit 38, and Loxley Exit 44, exits killed 47-year-old Yvonne Carlo Arnold.

The victim was said to be riding in the rear seat of a 1996 Ford Explorer driven by her brother, Gary Arthur Arnold, 56, of Farmersville, La. According to a state police press release, the Explorer was struck from behind by a 2002 Toyota 4-Runner driven by Jonathan W. Cook, 36, of Orange Beach.

The Explorer overturned, and Yvonne Arnold, who was said not to be wearing a seat belt, was ejected from the vehicle. Gary Arnold and another passenger, Cedric Sampson, were both wearing seat belts and were transported to USAMC for treatment of injuries.

According to state police, Sampson was Yvonne Arnold’s fiancé. Sampson’s age and hometown were not available from state police.

Cook was not injured in the crash. Police believe he was wearing a seat belt.

Cook was taken to Baldwin County Jail and charged with driving under the influence and murder.

While state troopers are still investigating the crash, they do believe that speed and alcohol were factors.

Shortly after 10 a.m. on Sunday, State Police were notified of a crash between a 1992 Ford Explorer and a Freightliner tractor pulling a flatbed trailer loaded with metal. The tractor and trailer overturned, sending metal and a small amount of fuel oil onto the roadway.

I-10 was closed until the authorities could clear part of the roadway, approximately two hours. State Troopers, ALDOT, Loxley Fire Department and others responded to the scene.

State police report that the driver of the truck was transported to Thomas Hospital for treatment of minor injuries and the driver of the Explorer was not injured.
