Drizzle doesn’t dampen Barbecue & Blues Cook-Off

FOLEY, Ala. — Despite Saturday’s rain, foodies and music lovers turned out at Heritage Park in Foley for the sixth annual Barbecue and Blues Cook-Off.

With the protection of umbrellas, attendees made their way from booth to booth to taste the variety of dishes prepared by the approximately 18 competitors at the sanctioned event.

“This year, the rain’s keeping the numbers donw some, but not a lot,” said Mike Hedariah of Triple 7 Barbecue.

While some returning teams said the weather lessened this year’s attendance, it didn’t keep everyone away.

“We love it,” said Marc Hendrickson of Robertsdale of the first trip to the event for he and wife Jackie. “You can’t go wrong with barbecue.”

The daylong event included live musical performances, a silent auction, a petting zoo, vendor booths and awards.

One person helping to judge the competition was Foley Mayor John Koniar.

“I’m having to pace myself,” he said while taking a break between categories.

The Baldwin County Sheriff’s Department was also handing out barbecue, but without taking part in the competition.

“We just decided to come out and be a part of it,” Sheriff Huey “Hoss” Mack said.

Proceeds from the Cook-Off benefited the South Baldwin Chamber Foundation, which provides education programs in South Baldwin schools.
