SPANISH FORT, Ala.—Select students from across Baldwin and Mobile counties will be honored Monday night during a private ceremony at the Arthur R. Outlaw Mobile Convention Center.
The Drug Education Council Inc. will recognize student leaders from 130 public, private and parochial schools during the 11th annual Superintendents’ Red Ribbon Awards gala.
Students are selected for their efforts to organize and lead substance abuse prevention and related community service activities throughout the fall, and the 2011 theme is “All Together Green,” casting a unique focus on oil spill-related environmental and economic recovery projects.
Superintendents Alan Lee of Baldwin County, Roy Nichols of Mobile County, Gwen Byrd of the Mobile Catholic Archdiocese and Wayne Vickers of Saraland City Schools will be featured during an Olympic-style awards ceremony.
“This is the only (awards program) of its kind to bring together all four area school superintendents to recognize outstanding student leaders from both Mobile and Baldwin counties,” said Denise D’Oliveira, executive director of Supporting Educational Enrichment in Daphne’s Schools and the gala’s coordinator.
D’Oliveira said more than 1,500 students from across the area have been similarly honored since 2000, and “encouraged to continue their commitment to community service.” The event will culminate with the announcement of the 2011 Red Ribbon Leadership Scholarship winners, honoring those graduating seniors whose efforts have made the greatest impacts on their schools and communities. Including this year’s honorees, the scholarship program has awarded area students $30,000 since 2005.
