Drug, theft cases set for grand jury review

BAY MINETTE, Ala. — The Baldwin County grand jury will review evidence against a Daphne man charged with trafficking marijuana after authorities allegedly discovered 3.75 pounds of the drug during a traffic stop in Elberta.

Tyler Lindsey Newman 29, of Sea Cliff Drive was arrested Oct. 19 at U.S. 98 and County Road 87, according to a deposition filed in Baldwin County District Court.

During the stop, a Sheriff’s deputy detected a strong odor of marijuana and conducted a search of the vehicle, court records state.

Newman waived a preliminary hearing Nov. 29. He spent six days at Baldwin County Corrections Center before posting a $20,000 bail, according to court records.

Other cases set for grand jury review include:

• Robert Lee Smith, 38, of Montgomery, who was arrested by Daphne Police officers Oct. 14.

Acting on an anonymous tip, authorities found probable cause to search Smith’s Eastern Shore Motel room and discovered marijuana, Lortabs, powder cocaine, crack cocaine, drug paraphernalia and a digital scale, according to a deposition filed in Baldwin County District Court.

Harris is charged with possession of controlled substances. He was released Oct. 16 after posting bail set at $5,000, according to court records.

• Peter Gibson Cherry, 50, of Cherry Hill Road in Daphne, is charged with second-degree theft of property after allegedly stealing a woman’s billfold containing two credit cards, according to an arrest warrant filed in Baldwin County Circuit Court.

The alleged incident occurred Aug. 18 according to an affidavit filed in district court. Cherry was arrested Oct. 8 and released the next day on bail set at $5,000.

Baldwin County District Judge Jody Bishop sent the case to the grand jury Nov. 30, records state.
