Captain George M. Dunlop, a native of Olean, N.Y., and a resident of Fairhope for the past 20 years, died Tuesday, Jan. 29, 2008 at Thomas Hospital.

He was a graduate of the State of New York Maritime College, Fort Schuyler, N.Y., and a World War II veteran.

He retired from Alcoa Steamship Company where he served as Master of several vessels. He was employed in maritime positions in New York and San Francisco. He was a member of professional societies, including the Boston Maritime Society and NY State Maritime Academy. It was his desire to be cremated and buried at sea.

Survivors include his wife of 61 years, Violet Dunlop; daughter, Nancy Dunlop of Santa Rosa, Calif.; son, George M. Dunlop of Concord, Calif.; and three grandchildren, Jesse, Sarah and Geordie.

A memorial service will held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 2, from the chapel of Wolfe-Bayview Funeral Home in Fairhope, with Pastor John J. Parsons officiating.
