Eastern Shore businesses fighting hunger as holidays draw closer

SPANISH FORT, Ala.—Bass Pro Shops and Eastern Shore Toyota joined forces Tuesday to fight hunger in Baldwin County.

With support from the city of Spanish Fort and the Spanish Fort Fire-Rescue, the two businesses are hosting a joint food drive benefiting Prodisee Pantry through Oct. 31 in the Bass Pro parking lot.

Non-perishable food donations can be taken to the collection area during regular business hours, and pantry staff and volunteers will be on site daily taking tax-deductible cash donations between 11 a.m. and 8 p.m. through Saturday and from 11 a.m. until 5 p.m. Sunday.

In addition to food collection, Bass Pro Shops will hold a drawing for an Arctic Cat all-terrain vehicle as well as gift cards and other products. Eastern Shore Toyota has pledged $100 per vehicle sold of the 75 displayed in the “Outdoor World” parking lot throughout the event.

Deann Servos, the pantry’s executive director, said each $100 donation is the equivalent of 900 pounds of food.

Eastern Shore Toyota’s Shawn Hudson said he and other members of the staff are prepared to make “stupid” deals all week because “it’s all about that 900 pounds per vehicle.”

“We’ve all walked away from the dinner table on Thanksgiving so full we had to take a nap, and there are too many people out there who can’t sleep because they’re hungry. Everybody’s had the stomach-growling feeling at one time or another, so we’re looking at donating several tons of food this week,” Hudson said.

In addition, the dealership will give away smokers Saturday to lucky winners who register and an ATV on Sunday. Of course, anyone who buys a Toyota Tundra during the promotion receives a free ATV, he said.

“We just started talking with the folks at Bass Pro (Shops), and this thing has completely snowballed. When you’re sitting around the table giving thanks this holiday season with the people you love, wouldn’t you like to know that you did something to help feed neighbors who would have gone without?” Hudson said.
