Eastern Shore cities close buildings, cancel activities

FAIRHOPE – During the covid-19 outbreak, Fairhope, Daphne and Spanish Fort have made changes at some facilities and operations to protect the health of residents, city officials said.

In Fairhope, officials announced Friday that the James P. Nix Center and Fairhope Museum of History will be closed to visitors for the next two weeks. On Monday, the City Council voted to close

Mayor Karin Wilson said the facilities will be cleaned and disinfected during the closing.

“Right now, we’re in a proactive mode,” Wilson said. “We want to do all we can to protect the health and safety of our residents. The Nix Center is used by many of our senior citizens and we want to do all we can to ensure their safety.”

The Fairhope Recreation Center was scheduled to close Saturday, March 14 for three days of a deep cleaning and reopen Tuesday, March 17, with extra cleaning and disinfection measures taken daily.

The Fairhope Public Library reported Friday that it would suspend operations starting Thursday, March 19.

Organized team activities on city sports fields were also cancelled, but Wilson said individual play at sites such as the municipal tennis courts and golf course would be allowed.

Wilson said Fairhope will continue to follow recommendations from the Alabama Department of Public Health.

In Daphne, the Public Library will discontinue operations on Thursday, March 19. Online services will continue and wi-fi internet access will be available in outdoor seating areas.

Senior services at the Fitness Center will be closed as of Thursday, March 19. The SAIL Site will discontinue dine-in lunch services and change to curbside delivery for Senior Nutritional Program participants.

The Civic Center was also open, but the Savvy Moms consignment sale and Daphne High School Prom have requested their events be moved to a later date.

The Alabama Youth Soccer Organization asked the Rangers to cancel their soccer games and practices until further notice. Daphne officials said Baseball, softball and flag football are parent run organizations and they have all decided to follow the Baldwin County public school’s lead. if they cancel or postpone their school sports, they will follow suit.

In Spanish Fort, City Hall will maintain normal business hours to conduct city business and assist the community members, Mayor Mike McMillan said.

All Spanish Fort youth league athletic events will be postponed until further notice, effective Wednesday, March 18.

He said residents should follow information issued by the appropriate agencies regarding protective measures and procedures to follow.

Price gouging and consumer fraud is illegal. Please report any illegal conduct to the appropriate agencies, the mayor said.

“We are blessed to live in this wonderful place and community of people. While it is appropriate to take protective measures to keep separation between us until the threat of this virus has passed, it does not mean we are “separated” or alone. Please take time to safely check on family, friends and neighbors. In particular, call and check on the elderly and those who live alone,” McMillan said in a statement.
