Whether basking on the beach or delighting in down time at home, these books aren’t a great commitment, but are a great read.
Any of the “Cat Who” murder mystery series by Lillian Jackson Braun
These murder mysteries center on retired journalist James Qwilleran and his extra-sensory Siamese cats Koko and Yum Yum. Set in the town of Pickax, described as “400 miles north of everywhere,” you can enter into any book in the series and not have to worry about finding the first book — each mystery is self-contained.
“Dad is Fat” by Jim Gaffigan
“Charming, funny, and endearing” could also be the mantra of stand-up comic Gaffigan, who muses on life as the father of five young children in short pieces made to be read between fielding requests for beach snacks and breaking up water-splash fights.
“Jaws” by Peter Benchley
You might raise some eyebrows pulling out this book as you sunbathe on the sand, but this is one of those texts that proves the old adage “The book is better than the movie.” OK … maybe not better, but different enough to hold your attention
