"3">Edward Weaver Allison, “Ed,” 76, of Foley, succumbed to cancer with dignity and in peace, surrounded by his family, at his home on Friday, Sept. 23, 2011.
"3">Ed was born in Huntingdon, Pa. on July 24, 1935, the son of Howard and Helen Weaver Allison. He attended Huntingdon High School where he was a student-football player and track athlete.
"3">After graduating, he joined the U.S. Navy and served on the USS Oriskany in the South Pacific in the 1950s, achieving the rank of E6. Upon returning from his military service, Ed took classes at Lycoming College but ultimately graduated from the “School of Hard Knocks” and went on to become an accomplished businessman.
"3">He retired after a successful 35-year career with IBM and a number of entrepreneurial achievements. In addition to real estate investments and a small trucking company, Ed owned The Hilltop Tavern in Lock Haven, Pa. and The Village Inn in Mill Hall, Pa.
"3">Ed married Mary Allison on Nov. 21, 1970, his wife of nearly 41 years. Ed had five children: Lucinda “Cindy” Allison Coldsmith and Steven Allison (from a previous marriage), Amy Lou and Carrie Rogers, and Edward Allison Jr. Ed’s extended family includes eight grandchildren and one great-grandson.
"3">During the course of his life, Ed lived in Huntingdon, Williamsport, Lock Haven, Carlisle and New Cumberland, Pa. before retiring to Foley. Throughout his active life, Ed was a member of multiple organizations including The Elks, Veterans of Foreign Wars, American Legion, Enola Sportsman’s Club and the Mechanicsburg Men’s Club.
"3">In the mid to late 1970s he served as a director of the Lock Haven “Lockettes” drill team, and then in the 1980s as president of the Cumberland Valley Wrestling Boosters.
"3">Ed was previously a member of the Allison United Methodist Church in Carlisle, and was current member of the Foley United Methodist Church in Alabama.
"3">Ed was an avid Pittsburgh sports fan, and could always be found cheering on the Pirates and Steelers at every opportunity … or yelling at them, depending on what the score was and what he felt it should be! He was a dog-lover during his lifetime, had many boxers throughout the years and currently was the proud owner of two Shih Tzus, Dolly and Ruby.
"3">Left to cherish his memory are his loving and devoted wife, Mary Allison, and his children: Cindy Coldsmith, Steven Allison, Amy Walizer, Carrie Arnold, Edward Allison Jr., and of course … his precious Dolly and Ruby.
"3">Services will be held at the Foley United Methodist Church on Friday, Sept. 30, at 11 a.m., and at Grace United Methodist Church in Lemoyne, Pa. on Oct. 2 at 2 p.m.
"3">Ed will be laid to rest on Oct. 4 in Lock Haven, Pa. at the Dunnstown Cemetery. A short Celebration of Life will be held after each service.
"3">The family would like to thank the Foley United Methodist Church, South Baldwin Medical Center and AseraCare Hospice Organization.
"3">In lieu of flowers, the family requests any contributions be made in Ed’s name to AseraCare, 708 W. Laurel Ave., Foley, AL, 36535; the American Cancer Society, or a charity of your choice. Contact Mary Allison at 717-350-0036 with any questions regarding Ed, donations or the arrangements.
"3">In summary, Ed’s life would be described as loving, hard-working, full of achievement and dedication.
"3">Ed would want us to close with words we heard him frequently say, “I think I’ll go down to Mexico to try to find Josey Wales … He’s got the first move, I owe him that … I think I’ll try to tell him the war is over.” And Ed would say, “I guess we all died a little in that damn war.”
"3">Arrangements by Cason Funeral Service, Foley.
