Elberta council changes overtime pay requirements for town police officers

Foley, Ala. - The Elberta Town Council unanimously approved a motion at Tuesday's council meeting to amend the employee handbook to state the town would pay police officers overtime after 86 hours per two-week pay period instead of 80 hours per two-week pay period.

Mayor Marvin Williams said state and federal labor law allows the town to not pay overtime until after 86 hours.

Councilman Jim Hambry said the move is the correct decision to help save money in the police department.

"The police department us already at 45 percent of its' budget, and everyone else is around the 30 percent range," he said.

The change is only for police officers.
