Elberta gets land

ELBERTA — The town of Elberta could soon have a new attraction, thanks to a recently-acquired portion of land.

“We just purchased a 50-foot lot,” Elberta Mayor Marvin Williams said in a telephone interview.

That lot is adjacent to the northwest corner of Elberta Town Park. Therefore, ideas under consideration for the land include a skate park or splash park.

Williams said the idea for a skate park has been under consideration for more than three years, after area youth approached the town about it.

“But we have to think about things like: how many kids will it take off the street,” he said, adding that cost and how much use it would get are to be considered.

The same is true for a splash park, he said.

“Some of the people are wanting a splash park,” Williams said.

He explained that the town has researched both ideas by examining Foley’s new skate park, as well as others in the area, and looking at Summerdale’s Splash Park. But part of that research includes the funding aspect.

“There are some recreation grants available,” Williams said. “A lot of it goes by population.”

One possibility might include funding gleaned from asking the Elberta Volunteer Fire Department to begin paying for its own water. Williams explained that this is now necessary because after the town sells its water system to Riviera Utilities, it no longer has the ability to provide free water service. However, he said, ad valorem revenue the department receives can be used to do so.

Williams said that while the project for the newly-acquired land will likely be discussed at Tuesday’s Town Council meeting, it is unlikely to be a formal agenda item.

“Because it has to be researched,” he said.
