ELBERTA - The Town of Elberta hopes to have Field 1 and Field 6 at the new Sportsplex complete by February 2021. Field 1 will be a large baseball field and Field 6 will be the girls’ softball field. The town has received bids for placing concrete poles for lighting at the Sportsplex. Engineer Alan Killen with Civil Southeast said Civil Southeast had performed a final inspection and was releasing the contractor of his portion of the work, allowing the town to take the project over moving forward.
Town Public Works has been working to connect power on the property, which Mayor Jim Hamby says should be completed shortly. Once power is connected, he says wells will be installed in order to begin irrigating the fields. The Elberta High School is seeking sod donations in order to complete the fields in time for the season.
“The school is trying to get somebody to donate sod for those fields instead of sprigging it in because it’s so late in the year and their ball season starts in February,” Hamby said. “If we sod them we’ll actually play ball on those fields next February, and those students will be seniors at our high school. So the school is very intent on trying to get those two fields done so that can happen.”
The Sports Association has shown support in completing the two fields for the senior class as the top priority. The next phase of the Sportsplex project would be getting an additional three baseball fields ready for Little League.
