ELBERTA, Ala. — Plans to establish a public library in Elberta continue.
During last week’s regular council meeting, the Elberta Town Council discussed the prospect.
Councilwoman Betty Wood said that she talked with a representative of Baldwin County Public Library Cooperative about the endeavor.
“In order to get state funding, I have to talk to ATRIUUM,” she said of the automated book-managing system.
Wood added that representatives offered to visit Elberta and give a presentation on the system. She also said Lillian Library representatives offered to donate four boxes of books for the project.
Mayor Marvin Williams said the town would need to look into what it would take to make the senior center ready to house a library.
“We’ve got a budget we’ve got to stay in,” he said.
Councilman Jim Hamby suggested moving forward with items the town has on hand.
“I think maybe what we should do is, if we have a safe, dry storage, go ahead and start getting these books together,” he said.
“We had books donated — boxes of them,” Councilwoman Alma Doege said.
The Council first broached the subject last month. That discussion had included the idea of turning the town’s little-used senior center into a library and supplying it with an all-volunteer staff.
During last week’s meeting, the Council also discussed the possibility of dividing the senior center up so a portion would remain available to rent. The The discussion ended with Wood and Councilwoman Alma Doege saying they had a meeting scheduled with the Lillian Public Library staff the following day and agreeing to get guidelines from the Baldwin County Public Library Cooperative.
