FOLEY — As the long Labor Day weekend was winding down, State Troopers report an Elberta man died in a motor vehicle crash Monday on Baldwin County Road 20, seven miles east of Foley.
The fatality was identified as Sanger Norman Merchant, 42. According to a press release issued the same day by Troopers, Merchant was traveling west on County Road 20 when he lost control of his vehicle, left the road and overturned. His vehicle struck another vehicle in a driveway.
Merchant wasn't wearing a seatbelt and was partially ejected from his vehicle. He was pronounced dead at the scene of the 6:55 p.m. crash, the release said. Alcohol and speed are believed to have been factors in the crash.
State Troopers also report that two bicyclists were struck by a pickup truck earlier that same day and killed on Bromley Road in north Baldwin County.
Troopers identified the fatalities as William Frederick Imle, 48, of Daphne, and Archie Leroy Clemons Jr., 46, of Spanish Fort.
According to a press release issued by Troopers that same day, the 2003 Chevrolet Silverado pickup that struck the cyclists was driven by Patrick Blake Young Ballard, age unknown. Ballard's truck was traveling east, and he failed to negotiate a curve, striking the cyclists, the release said. The truck went into a ditch before overturning, ejecting Ballard and a 17-year-old female passenger.
Imle and Clemons were pronounced dead at the scene of the crash, which occurred shortly before 9 a.m., according to the release. Ballard was taken to the University of South Alabama Medical Center in Mobile where he was admitted. The female passenger was treated and released.
Troopers continue to investigate the cause of the crash, but no charges have been filed at this time.
Attempts to find out Ballard's condition as of Tuesday morning proved unsuccessful.
