"font-family: Helvetica;">FOLEY, Ala. - The latest chapter in the

Elberta police chief saga has been written.

According to Mayor Marvin Williams, Mickey Pledger has resigned as

the Elberta police chief.

"font-family: Helvetica;">

Williams said Pledger's attorney sent an e-mail to the town's

attorney, Ken Raines, on Tuesday stating that Pledger resigned.

Williams said that according to Raines, the e-mail "solidified

it."

"font-family: Helvetica;">            "He

said not to worry about it, and that this is what we need,"

Williams said, noting that he expects a formal letter from

Pledger's attorney.

"font-family: Helvetica;">            The

Baldwin County Sheriff's Office announced on March 4 that Pledger

had been arrested and charged with firing into an occupied

building, filing a false police report and tampering with

evidence.

"font-family: Helvetica;">            Pledger

filed a report stating that on Feb. 13 a man shot at him outside

the Elberta Police Department. Pledger claims he was looking for a

file in his vehicle when he spotted a man near the back of the

building. Pledger said in the report that when he approached the

man, a single shot was fired. Pledger said he fired a shot in

return, but the suspect fled the scene on foot.

According to a released statement by the sheriff's office, Pledger

failed a polygraph exam and then admitted to the above

charges.

"font-family: Helvetica;">            On March 7, the town named

Julie Joyner as interim police chief.
