Elberta road repairs set to begin

ELBERTA, Ala. — Work on Elberta roadways damaged during the April flood could begin as early as this week.

On Friday, Elberta Public Works Director Tim Bragg said contracts have been awarded to R&S Paving and Amons & Blackmon. The Town Council made those awards during a special meeting on June 20.

That special meeting came when, during the Council’s regular meeting on June 17, Town Attorney Ken Raines asked the Council to table its decision on the issue until he could conduct further research.

The awarded bids, totaling $136,113, consist of 13 projects to repair culverts and washed-out roads. The town is seeking funding from the Federal Emergency Management Agency for 75 percent of that cost and the remainder divided between the state and town.

Bragg said that the only thing left is to wait for work to begin.

“They’re scheduling and getting materials prepared,” he said.

Bragg explained that because other BaldwinCounty municipalities have their own repairs, materials such as gravel and pipe are running low. Plus, construction companies have had to prioritize their repair jobs.

“There’s just such a demand,” he said.

But Bragg estimated that work could start as early as sometime this week.
