Elberta tables request for de-annexation

ELBERTA — Representatives of Wolf Bay LLC will have to wait until September to find out whether they get to break off from the town of Elberta.

During its regular meeting last week, the Elberta Town Council decided to table a request from N.C. Davis to de-annex some 400 acres of property from the town.

Davis representative Richard Davis made the request, reminding the council that the land owned in question was annexed into Elberta in 2006 with the understanding that the organization would have flexibility with its use of the acreage. Now the owner wants to sell a large portion of the acreage to a conservation group and develop the rest, saying the county would allow more flexibility that Elberta.

“I don’t see why you need to de-annex to do all of that,” Elberta Mayor Pro-Tem Steve Kirkpatrick said.

Further discussion led the council to table the issue until its September meeting so it could be reviewed. This came against Davis’ insistence that the vote take place that evening. But it was also under the advisement of Town Attorney Ken Raines.

“I certainly recommend you table it and not vote tonight,” he told the council.

But that’s not all the items the Council delayed. Additional items tabled until September include:

Renewal of annual dues for membership in the South Baldwin Chamber of Commerce at a cost of $600.

Road repairs of various streets, with the understanding that three bids will be submitted for consideration.

Also last week, the Elberta Town Council:

Approved utilities adjustments of Lyndell Sandford and Patricia Murrell for utility bills that spiked due to circumstances beyond their control.

Denied a request by the Red Cross for $500 in funding.

Approved a $5,000 contribution to the Baldwin County Heritage Museum to keep the non-profit facility operating through 2012.
