ELBERTA — An alleged crime spree earlier this week has landed two Elberta teenagers in police custody.
According to Elberta Police, a 14-year-old male and his 13-year-old sister were arrested at approximately 6 a.m. Monday morning in Elberta following an alleged burglary escapade that spanned about six hours and went from the town into Foley.
Elberta PD Investigative Sgt. Scott Tart explained that the spree seemed to have started around midnight when the siblings reportedly ran away from home.
“The parents didn’t report it until around 5 a.m. because they had done this before and they thought they’d come back,” he said in an interview at the Elberta Police Station.
But instead of returning to their home, the teenagers reportedly went “car hopping.”
“It’s when you pull on car-door handles and when one opens, you steal whatever is inside the cars,” Elberta Police Chief Stan DeVane said. “The ones that are locked, they don’t mess with.”
In addition to stealing items in the vehicles, which included a pistol, the pair allegedly stole two vehicles, a 2003 Lincoln Navigator and a 2012 Chevrolet Sonic, ditching one for the other in fear of being spotted by authorities. That in itself, could have led to a disastrous outcome.
“This couldn’t have gotten very serious,” DeVane said.
With the vehicles, the teens also are reported to have stolen a number of items from Saint Benedict Catholic School in Elberta, including a 50-inch television, two computers, several iPaids, sports equipment, candy and office supplies, most of which seems to have been recovered.
“The dollar amount of items recovered was $8,787.85,” Tart said.
That includes items recovered from previous burglary reports, DeVane said.
But the teenagers reportedly also went through the school and vandalized it, defecating on and completely ruining one computer, defecating in a classroom, defacing crosses and writing expletives on a classroom writing board. In addition, the pair reportedly killed a tarantula, a classroom pet, and stuffed it elsewhere in the classroom.
“The dollar amount of damages and repair to the school is $220,” Tart said.
So were these two disgruntled students at Saint Benedict?
“No, they were home-schooled,” Tart said.
He explained that the juveniles said they acted in retaliation against being disciplined at home.
“And in his words, ‘They were bored,’” Tart said.
The siblings didn’t have previous arrest records, either.
“Although the girl has run away before,” DeVane said.
But that’s no longer the case. After arousing suspicion from both Elberta and Foley Police, the brother and sister were apprehended and taken to Foley Police Department at approximately 6 a.m. Monday before being transferred to Baldwin County Juvenile Center in Bay Minette.
At press time, the two were set to go before the court Wednesday on six felony charges in Foley, and 10 felony charges and two misdemeanors with the Elberta Police Department.
