Elderly Bay Minette woman dies after fire

BAY MINETTE, Ala. — A fire in a Bay Minette duplex Sunday has claimed the life an elderly woman.

According to officials, 78-year-old Louise Thomas and her two adult grandsons were in her Hickory Street home when a fire ignited in the building.

Bryars explained that the woman was unable to get out of the building alone, so her grandsonsgot her out and took her down the street in a wheel-chair-type device.

An ambulance then transported Thomas to North Baldwin Infirmary where she later died, he said.

The exact cause of death has yet to be determined from the autopsy, the fire chief said.

According to Bryars, firefighters put out the blaze within 10 minutes of being alerted.

The blaze was caused by an electrical outlet where a window air-conditioning unit was plugged in, Bryars said.
