Mike Odom’s coverage of the current campaign is usually outstanding, but I wonder about his recent implication that Dr. John Meyer is a pawn of the “Nix Machine” and is running against Debbie Quinn for Place 1 on the City Council at the direction of Mrs. Nix.

Come on guys, if the intent were to unseat a popular incumbent, surely they could do better than Meyer. Debbie Quinn has served on the council roughly twice as long as he has lived in Fairhope. In addition to her service on the council, she has been the chair of a string of civic organizations, holds a leadership position in the Alabama League of Municipalities, founded our Historic Preservation Committee, etc., etc.

Her just-in-time opponent is a former public schools administrator from Illinois whose principal accomplishment in our community is having gotten himself elected president of a garden club.

Maybe your reporter is looking for something that isn’t there, and Mrs. Nix was just seeking Dr. John’s advice on fertilizer.
