Elfreida Louise Bleimeyer Hammond, 92, died Tuesday, Jan. 21, 2014 in Fairhope.

She was born at home in the Woodland Heights area of Houston, Texas on Jan. 2, 1922 to Minna and Arthur Bleimeyer.

Elfreida  graduated from Reagan High School, class of 1940.

To satisfy a lifelong ambition, she attended Memorial Hospital School of Nursing in downtown Houston. While there, our nation entered World War II, causing major changes in the lives of our citizens.

She met and married a Navy man who was attending the University of Houston. Because of hospital rules, they were married secretly in order for her to finish nurse’s training.

Her husband, H.B. Hammond, served in the Navy until the end of the war.

Elfreida embarked on a lifetime of working in many capacities as an R.N. She truly loved nursing and taking care of people, and her patients loved her dearly.

While living in Fairhope with her daughter, Jodie O’Daniel, she volunteered many hours at Thomas Hospital, did private duty nursing and was a member of First Baptist Church of Fairhope, where she enjoyed singing with the Golden Tones.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and her brother, Arthur Bleimeyer Jr.

She is survived by her sister, Patricia Bleimeyer Maxwell and husband Bobby Maxwell of Humble, Texas; her two children, Jodie Hammond O’Daniel of Fairhope, and Scott Hammond and wife Lisa of Statesville, N.C.; her grandchildren, Amy Craig Smith and husband Kenny of Fairhope, and Eric Craig and wife Regina of Fairhope; four great-granddaughters, Courtland and Kennedy Craig, and Savannah and Lanie Smith; many cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.

The funeral service and burial were held at Forest Park Lawndale in Houston, Texas on Saturday, Jan. 25, 2014.
