FAIRHOPE—They don’t call it the ‘Battle’ of the Bay for nothing.
Down 3-1 at the half, the Baldwin County Showcase All-Star girls team battled back against the Mobile side Friday.
Daphne High’s Chanel Elgin scored all four of the Baldwin team’s goals. The last came with about five seconds remaining on a direct kick from 30 yards out for a come-from-behind 4-4 tie.
“Well, I haven’t taken a day off since we (Daphne) lost in the playoffs,” Elgin said. “I think it will help make us want to get better for next year. We really had to hustle as a team to make that last (goal), I don’t know. It was a great effort.”
Elgin and her teammates had a formidable task in taking on Mobile all stars that included players from 5A state champion St. Paul’s and 6A state semifinalist McGill-Toolen who had eliminated DHS in the third round.
Baldwin girls coach and Spring Hill College assistant coach Daniel Whelan said the four-all tie in the fourth annual Battle of the Bay soccer showcase at W.C. Majors Field was a success considering the level of competition.
“Obviously, Chanel scored four goals, she had a great night. The whole team showed great character to come from 3-1 down and tie it at four all. They did it against some great players, Paloma (Perez of McGill-Toolen) is a great athlete. So I’m pleased with the defense’s effort overall. They did a great job of keeping them from going forward much of the time,” he said.
It was also a big night for Gulf Shores stand out and college scholarship recipient Toni DeVaney, who is still recovering from auto accident injuries suffered on the first day of her senior season.
Devaney, who would have played in her third showcase was honored by officials, coaches, players and fans in a kick-off ceremony to start the girls match.
“It was fun. I got to do that for senior night in our last home game and it was very special because all my teammates were there,” she said. “This was special, too, with all the people from Mobile and over here. It’s an honor. I plan to get back out there for real as soon as I can.”
All proceeds from the showcase go to the M.D. Anderson Children's Cancer Hospital through the Kicks for Cancer foundation, along with matching funds from Victor and Lee Teumer.
Susan Raley, who volunteered for the event, said there were about 500 paid spectators making it the largest crowd so far.
“We want to thank everyone for helping get the word out because it is for a great charity,” she said.
Perez scored two goals for Mobile with one assist by Summer Carter of Alabama School of Math & Science.
Courtney Harlan of McGill and Challey Legg of St. Paul's also scored.
