EMA announces shelter openings

FAIRHOPE, Ala. — The Baldwin County Emergency Management Agency has announced that two emergency shelters will be opened Friday and Saturday nights (Jan. 8 and 9) for county residents in need of protection from the frigid temperatures expected.

EMA Director Leigh Anne Ryals said Thursday that St. Paul’s Episcopal Church at 506 N. Pine St. in Foley and the Level II Shelter at 207 N. White Ave. in Bay Minette will be open both nights, from 6 p.m. until 8 a.m.

The Salvation Army at 1009 Dauphin St. in Mobile has also offered to shelter women and children at their location.

Ryals said EMA has worked with the American Red Cross in preparing the two in-county shelters.

Standard shelter rules (such as no pets, firearms or alcohol) apply.

Take with you prescription medications and medical supplies; bedding and clothing, including sleeping bags and pillows; and food for meals.

The National Weather Service in Mobile is forecasting a low around 15 degrees for the northern part of Baldwin County Friday night, with wind chill readings of zero to 10 above zero Saturday morning.

The central and southern areas will likely have mercury readings between 17 and 22 degrees Friday night, and wind gusts up to 35 mph will make it feel much colder.

On Saturday night, upper parts of the county could experience a low around 17. Lower reaches of the county will have temperatures dip to around 20 to 25 degrees.
