FAIRHOPE — Ecumenical Ministries Inc. staff and volunteers stayed on EMI’s Fairhope Avenue rooftop 53 hours and raised more than $15,000, surpassing the three-day goal of their campaign titled “Take the heat off EMI by donating dollars.” “We were able to take the last trip down on the cherry-picker around 2 p.m. Wednesday,” said Darlene Smith, EMI community liaison. “We couldn’t have done it without the help of a generous community, Thank you all!” Employees of the nonprofit United Way agency took to the rooftop Monday morning to hopefully raise money for their emergency aid program, which helps families with rent and mortgage assistance, utilities, gasoline and basic medical and dental needs. Rising costs for gasoline and increased utility usage due to the extreme temperatures resulted in increased client needs. Anyone who would like to make a donation can still drop it off at the office or mail it to: EMI, 564 Fairhope Ave., Fairhope, AL 36532.
