DAPHNE, Ala. — The Baldwin Pops Band, conducted by Joe Riemer and Dr. Roger Jones will give a free outdoor concert titled “An Evening with the Pops” on April 10, at 5 p.m., at Bayfront Park in Daphne. The concert will be moved inside at the same location if the weather is bad.

This concert, originally scheduled for April 19, is one of Daphne’s Sunday Sunset Concert series. Ten talented high school seniors from five Baldwin County high schools have joined the band and are competing for the annual John Allen scholarship to be announced on April 24. Those students are Trey Fyock and Perrin Windham from Daphne High School; Crystal Garrard and Whit Cadwell from Fairhope High School; Kevin Denton and Harrison Burr from Gulf Shores High School; Bryant Ramey, Gabrielle Kendrick and Roben Campbell from Robertsdale High School; and Jacqie Rotch from Spanish Fort High School.

The band will play “Fiddler on the Roof,” arranged by Warren Barker, “First Suite in Eb” by Gustav Holst, “Jupiter” by Gustav Holst, “On a Hymnsong of Philip Bliss” by David R. Holsinger, “On the Eastern Shore” by our own Roger Jones and “The Thunderer” by John Philip Sousa.

A 2010 scholarship winner, Shawn Wright, will perform Alfred Reed’s “Ode to Trumpet” with the band.

Bring a picnic supper and something to sit on while you enjoy an Eastern Shore sunset. After intermission, there will be a children’s parade with flags and the Checkered Tablecloth Award to a lucky picnicker.

This concert is sponsored by the city of Daphne and by a grant from the Alabama State Council on the Arts.
