FAIRHOPE, Ala. — The Eastern Shore Art Center has announce this year’s recipients of the Young at Art Scholarships.
Fairhope High School’s Taylor Moore and Spanish Fort High School’s Victoria Spriggs were recently recognized at a Young at Art “Meet the Artist” party for this year’s featured artist Maxey Andress.
“Although this is Young at Art’s second year as an organization, the impressive portfolios submitted by students from four area high schools thrill us. The works contained within them reinforce our belief in the depth of talent of our county’s young artists,” said Coleman Mills, YAA chairman.
Moore plans to attend Parsons New School of Design in New York City and Spriggs plans to attend Savannah College of Art and Design in Savannah, Ga.
Andress will be showcasing his work at the Second Annual Young at Art fund-raising event, “Hot Salsa Night,” on July 26.
Andress was recently named “best emerging artist” in Creative Loafing, the Atlanta arts, entertainment and culture newspaper.
“Having Maxey Andress as our featured artist is doubly gratifying. Not only is his work beautiful and engaging, but his career trajectory (from a high student in South Alabama, to Auburn graduate and successful business owner in Atlanta, finally to award-winning artist) serves as a perfect model for our student winners,” said Mills.
His Art Center show titled “Soul Origami” will examine the ever evolving nature of our perceptions and the unique relationship that lives between things that appear separate.
Andress’ work will be on exhibit at the Art Center during the months of July and August.
Young at Art is a society of adults interested in art: viewing it, creating it, collecting it and critiquing it.
YAA seeks to bring artists of regional renown to exhibit in Fairhope. YAA is looking for new genres, new techniques and artists newly discovered elsewhere.
YAA aspires to assist promising artists in our local high schools in hopes of propelling their art career.
