DAPHNE, Ala. — The Daphne Public Library will host speaker Debra Garlo, Gulf Coast Exploreum marketing representative, to preview “Our Body: the Universe Within” at 10 a.m. on Wednesday.
The Jan. 11–May 11 exhibit will feature 11 whole-body specimens, 75 anatomical displays and three-dimensional, cross-sectioned views of plasticized human specimens, according to the Exploreum’s Web site.
The library event promoting that exhibit will include a presentation on the coming exhibit and the Exploreum’s current entertainment and learning opportunities. Garlo will also present an eight-minute video featuring some items from the exhibit and background information, Garlo said.
“This preview will show people what the Exploreum offers,” she said. “A lot of people think we are a city museum or are just for kids. We’re actually a non-profit organization.
“We want people to understand the great opportunities for all ages in this facility — right here in Mobile.”
Friends of the Daphne Public Library, a volunteer support group, will provide coffee and refreshments for Garlo’s presentation — another in the library’s Jubilee Mornings series.
The library encourages expanding one’s knowledge in many topics, which is one reason they invite a variety of speakers on different subjects, Deborah Norris, reference librarian, said.
“We are a public library,” she said. “It is important to promote all areas of learning.”
The library, she said, tries to have a selection of materials and guest speakers as varied as the public’s interest itself.
“We have more than just literature,” Norris said. “We have sections on science, history and much more.”
The library offers the Jubilee Mornings series the first Wednesday of every month at 10 a.m. This month’s event is Jan. 9 due to the New Year’s holiday.
