MOBILE, Ala. — The Gulf Coast Exploreum Science Center’s new state-of-the-art health exhibit, My BodyWorks, has proved to be a great success so far, with more than 4,000 people visiting during opening weekend, at a time when many attractions nationwide are recording a drop in attendance.
Attendance numbers were higher for the first week of this exhibit as compared to last January. A key factor may be significantly cheaper ticket prices — a savings of more than $10 per ticket.
For example, an adult combo ticket in 2008 was $25 whereas now an adult combo ticket is only $14. Combo tickets include admission to the entire Exploreum as well as an IMAX Film.
Instead of the recession-driven trend of offering less value for the same price, the Exploreum is offering even more with the addition of My BodyWorks.
The science center now has more than 150 exhibits, along with a $10 savings on each ticket as compared to last year.
Across the nation, discretionary spending is at an all-time low and attendance at science centers, zoos and museums has been negatively affected, according to a new report issued by The Morey Group.
“Everyone is cutting back, planning less travel and fewer cultural outings so we’re offering an economic stimulus package of sorts to ensure visitors can afford what’s important — fun, memorable educational experiences,” said Michael Sullivan, Exploreum executive director.
An Exploreum membership offers even more savings. Throughout the year, members receive free admission to the entire Exploreum, discounts on IMAX tickets and 20 percent off birthday parties, gift shop purchases, camp registrations and café items.
The Gulf Coast Exploreum Science Center is a not-for-profit, community-owned organization created to promote science education along the Gulf Coast.
It was named Alabama’s Attraction of the Year by the Alabama Department of Tourism of Travel and is the seventh most visited attraction in the state. In addition to traveling exhibits and changing IMAX films, the Exploreum provides families hands-on science adventures in seven exhibit areas: My BodyWorks, Minds On Hall, Hands On Hall, Wharf of Wonder, Virtual Journeys Digital Theater, the BioLab and The Ciba Lab.
