MOBILE, Ala. — The Gulf Coast Exploreum Science Center’s 2009 Summer Camps will soon get under way. The week-long camps will be held June 8-July 24 at 65 Government St. in downtown Mobile.

They are:

Exploreum taking applications for summer camps

MOBILE, Ala. — The Gulf Coast Exploreum Science Center’s 2009 Summer Camps will soon get under way. The week-long camps will be held June 8-July 24 at 65 Government St. in downtown Mobile.

They are:

•Battle Tech (Grades 6-8), June 8-12, 8:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m.

At ease soldiers! This camp guides explorers through the science of the battlefield. From telegraphs to spy codes and periscopes to planes, campers will learn and recreate the technologies used in the Civil War and WWII. $140 members/$170 non-members.

•Junior Engineer (Grades 4-6), June 15-19 and July 13-17, 8:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m.

•Build It! (Grades 1-3), June 15-19 and July 13- 17, 8:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m.

Bridges, catapults and rockets! Campers will design, build and test their own creations. They'll discover that everyone is an engineer. $140 members/$170 non-members.

•Master Engineer (Grades 6-12), June 8-12, June 15-19 and June 22-26, 9 a.m.-2 p.m.

Robots! Robots! Using technical writing, product development and the model of BEST Robotics, campers will design, build and test robots during this challenging week. Lunch is included on Friday for this camp. $270 members/$325 non-members. Instructor: Mike Fletcher, Davidson High School EPIC Program.

•Junior Explorer (Grades 4-6), June 8-12 and July 6- 10, 8:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m.

•How Does It Work? (Grades 1-3), June 8-12 and July 6-10, 8:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m.

Curious how things work? From machines to bodies to technology, campers will have fun exploring the science behind how things work. $140 members/$170 non-members.

•Junior Doctor (Grades 4-6), June 22-26 and July 20-24, 8:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m.

•What's Up Doc? (Grades 1-3) June 22-26 and July 20-24, 8:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m.

Bringing the hospital to the Exploreum. Put on those scrubs and let’s get to work. Your patient needs your expertise to become healthy (partnership with Infirmary Health Professionals). $140 members/$170 non-members.

•We’ve got the Guts! (Grades 6-12), June 15-19 and June 22-26, 9 a.m.-2 p.m. or 11 a.m.-4 p.m.

Dissections galore! Compare fish, amphibians and reptiles. Working in pairs, campers will dissect a shark (fish), a mudpuppy (amphibian) and a turtle (reptile). Explore the internal systems and how they work.

Lunch is included on Friday for this camp. $270 members/$325 non-members. Instructor: Derek Blackmon, Alma Bryant High School Biology Department.

**All camps for Grades 1-12 will be taught by certified teachers.

**Snacks and T-shirts are included for all camps. Children will bring their lunch unless otherwise stated above.

•Camp WOW (Wharf of Wonder), Ages 4 and 5.

Specific camps are:

Lil’ How Does It Work? Is your little one curious about how things work? They'll discover the science behind everyday objects from the seesaw at the park to kitchen utensils. Monday, Wednesday, Friday, June 8, 10, 12 and July 6, 8, 10, 9 a.m.-noon.

Lil’ Build It!

Children love to build! Join us as we use real tools to build useful objects. Monday, Wednesday, Friday, June 15, 17, 19 and July 13, 15, 17, 9 a.m.-noon.

Oh The Things You Could Do That Are Good For You!

Be the best you can be! Learn about healthy snacks, fun exercises and how to keep germs away. Monday, Wednesday, Friday, June 22, 24, 26 and July 20, 22, 24, 9 a.m.-noon.
