DAPHNE, Ala.—Three members of the national faculty of the United States Sports Academy are traveling to Thailand this month on special one-week teaching assignments.
Dr. Roch King will deliver a course on sports coaching methodology starting Feb. 16 while Dr. Stan Drawdy will lead a course on ethics in sports starting March 2. The courses are being taught on the heels of a one-week sports administration course that national faculty member Dr. Dick Bell taught in Thailand at the beginning of February.
Roch King chairs the academy’s sports coaching department and has 30 years’ experience in coaching. He holds the Ph.D. in psychosocial interactions in sport. A doctoral graduate of Temple University, King’s career has included faculty appointments at Bloomsburg University of Pennsylvania, Ball State University and the University of Indianapolis.
At Bloomsburg, he was the head coach for men’s swimming and founded water polo clubs for men and for women. The Collegiate Water Polo Association named him King Mid-Atlantic Coach of the Year in 2000. He recently wrapped up three years’ service on the National Council for the Accreditation of Coaching Education executive board, including a term as president (2006-2007). He competes actively in volleyball and masters swimming.
An academy instructor since 2001, Stan Drawdy retired from Hannah-Pamplico High School in South Carolina, where he served as athletic director, head football coach, and golf coach. He coached and taught in South Carolina for over 30 years. He also served on the directorial boards of the South Carolina Athletic Administrators Association, the South Carolina Coaches Association and the Football Coaches Association.
In addition, Drawdy worked for the South Carolina State Department of Education as a certified facilitator and chairperson for the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. He holds the Ed.D. from Nova Southeastern University.
Dick Bell was formerly a U.S. Navy helicopter pilot, flying search-and-rescue missions during the Vietnam War. Following his Navy service, Bell, a graduate of Clemson University with a bachelor of science degree in premedicine, studied law at the University of South Carolina. He practiced law for 25 years, including an appointment as assistant district attorney. He also holds a master’s degree in history from The Citadel.
Bell earned the Ed.D. in sports management from the U.S. Sports Academy and subsequently chaired the institution’s sports management department in 2000, spending six months in this period teaching graduate-level sports management students at the University of Bahrain.
