Fairhope annexes Firethorne subdivision site into city limits

FAIRHOPE, Ala. — The Fairhope City Council voted unanimously on Monday to annex the site of the future Firethorne subdivision into the Fairhope city limits.

The 123-acre, 227-lot subdivision will be located on the east side of Highway 181, south of Quail Creek Drive. The average lot size will be 17,000 square feet and the subdivision will include amenities like a pool, clubhouse, playground and 12 percent open space.

Council President Jack Burrell said he had heard concerns from citizens about traffic at the site’s entrance on 181. Planning and Zoning Director Jonathan Smith said the city would receive a traffic study at the time of preliminary plat approval.

“That’s actually a condition of approval in our staff report,” he said. “So at that time we will review the traffic study and whatever that study renders we will require the developer to make the necessary improvements, which could require a traffic light. At this time we do not know.”

Firethorne will be developed over several years. It will not connect to Quail Creek because of a city ordinance prohibiting it. It will connect on the south side to the Stone Creek neighborhood.
