FAIRHOPE, Ala. — Howard Frank Mosher, author of “Walking to Gatlinburg,” will sign copies of his book at Page & Palette Bookstore, 32. S. Section St. in Fairhope, on March 25, at 10 a.m. He will welcome meeting readers in this casual midmorning gathering.
This work marks the 10th novel from Mosher, a resident of Vermont where he has lived since 1964.
He has won many awards for his fiction, including Guggenheim and National Endowment for the Arts fellowships, the American Academy of Arts and Letters Literature Award, the American Civil Liberties Award for Excellence in the Arts, the Vermont Governor’s Award for Excellence in the Arts and the New England Book Award.
Three of his novels, “Disappearances,” “A Stranger in the Kingdom” and “Where the Rivers Flow North,” have been made into acclaimed feature films.
Described as a Civil War thriller, his latest novel begins with young Morgan Kinneson, just 17 years old, walking from northern Vermont to the Great Smokies in search of his brother. During his travels, he encounters runaway slaves and is pursued by escaped convicts.
Mosher worked on this novel for seven years, and it has already received critical acclaim from Publishers Weekly and is a starred review by Kirkus.
The bookstore will then host author Richard L. Pate Jr. on March 27, from 10 a.m. until noon. He will sign copies of his memoir “Why Me Lord? A Marine’s Story.”
Pate was born during the Depression to very young but caring parents. He spent his early years near grandparents so he never had a shortage of love and attention.
As he went to military schools he was indoctrinated in military lifestyle, yet his mother was surprised when he joined the Marine Corps.
At age 14, he met his wife, and it is to her that he owes any success he’s had. They graduated college together, have five kids and later spent five years in Hawaii.
He served a total of 24 years in the Corps and fought in two wars. After retirement, he took on a second career by becoming an aerospace engineer.
He worked on such programs as Space Shuttle Mods, F-22, B-1B and F-117. Eventually, he retired from aerospace and became a history teacher.
Pate now lives with his wife near the beautiful white sand beaches of south Alabama.
Page and Palette will then celebrate the debut of newly released fiction book, “A Melody to My Father,” by inviting the public and local community a personal opportunity to meet and greet author Alicia B. Thompson. A book signing will take place on March 27, from 2-4 p.m.
The book is based on a continual dialogue between a daughter and her father.
The daughter is anxious and determined to pursue her dreams. However, she is faced with a life-changing event in which she is left to confront her own guilt and depression, as she later learns and understands who she really is and what life is all about.
Thompson is a native Mobilian and has always enjoyed writing short stories, to envision and create her dreams and goals.
She looks forward to connecting and inspiring her audience through her writing as they begin to discover the new melody within themselves.
The authors will exclusively sign all books purchased from Page & Palette.
