Fairhope Budget Committee to meet tomorrow, Thursday, May 19; garbage and financial committees meet May 20 and May 23

FAIRHOPE, Ala. - A meeting of the Fairhope Budget Committee is scheduled for 1 p.m., Thursday, May 19.

The meeting will be to discuss the committee's organization, goals and timetable, according to city staff.

The budget committee consists of the following Stan Grubin, Chair, Mayor Tim Kant

Council President Lonnie Mixon, Chuck Zunk and Gail Gardner.

In other announcement, the following city committees will meet:

On Friday, May 20 at 1:30 p.m., city garbage committee will meet.

The agenda for that meeting will include the following: discussion of bidding sanitation services; ordinance amendments; fees incurred by residents to properly dispose of Freon; fees incurred by residents for extra baggage put our near the can; fees incurred by residents for appliance pick up; fees incurred by residents for debris over a truckload, left at curb; further discussion of garbage rates/fees; and trucks/maintenance and overtime costs.

At the May 9 City Council meeting, Council President Lonnie Mixon announced that he wanted next year’s budget to include a one-year fee waiver for garbage services to residents.

After the meeting, several city officials and staff, including the mayor, Councilman Mike Ford who chairs the garbage committee, and the public works director, whose department handles garbage services for the city, said they had not been informed of any plans for garbage fee waivers prior to Mixon’s announcement.

The Financial Advisory Committee will meeting at 4:45 p.m., Monday, May 23.

The agenda includes discussions involving the Fairhope Veterans Memorial, Secure Our Schools 2011 Grant Program, garbage trucks, and use of Compressed Natural Gas to power city vehicles.

There is no item on the FAC meeting agenda regarding the garbage fee waiver proposal.
