Fairhope educational enrichment camps begin June 20

FAIRHOPE, Ala. - It’s hard to keep three kids under the age of 12 occupied once the summer-slump, “I’m bored” chorus begins, but Janice Gilley of Spanish Fort has a plan.

“I’ve got a master list of one-week summer camps. They each get to pick one, but there are two rules: They can’t pick the same weeks, and they have to come home every night and share with the other two what they learned,” said Gilley, who homeschools her children and said she relies on “every resource available” to keep her kids engaged year-round.

Diana Brewer, executive director of the Fairhope Educational Enrichment Foundation might have exactly what Gilley needs.

FEEF’s Summer Enrichment Academy 2011 begins June 20 with an array of four-day specialty camps running intermittently through the end of July.

“Response has been good, but we can certainly use more,” said Brewer, noting all classes currently have at least a few vacancies, but time is running short.

“The really fun thing about the academy is the variety we’re offering this year that should appeal to a wide range of ages and interests, and we’ve worked really hard to make sure the times are convenient,” she said.

The academy offers more than a dozen camps ranging in price from $20 to $150. In some instances age restrictions apply, and space is limited, so Brewer encouraged parents and caregivers to apply early and often before the slots are gone.

“Our most popular (camp) right now is probably ‘Sharks and Creatures of the Gulf Coast’ for the younger kids, and the opera camp is going to be absolutely fabulous,” said Brewer, referring specifically to “Act! Sing! and Everything in Between,” being led by Stacey Driskell of the Mobile Opera.

In addition, FEEF’s Summer Enrichment Academy will also offer the following:

• “Meet the Masters!,” an exploration of artistic icons with Elaine Littleton.

• “Drawing with the Right Side of the Brain” with Elaine Littleton.

• “Spanish for Kids!” wit Sarah Cooper.

• “Beginning Chess” with Tricia Hudson.

• “When Words Become Music-A Songwriting Camp” with Alison Pritchard.

• “Look Out MTV! Produce and Star in Your Own Music Video!” with Rita Ayers.

• “Bestselling Authors  in the Making” with Kacie Hardmann.

• “iCamp is Eye-Opening!” with Michele Jordan.

• “Oops! Let’s Do it Again: Algebra 1 Review for the AHSGE and ACT” with Michele Jordan.

• “Introduction to Band” with Steve McKinney and Jennifer Salley.

• “Summer Summer Fun for Multi-Disabled” with licensed practical nurse Lisa Simmons

• “Rotary Youth Club Summer Enrichment” with Trina Jackson.

For complete descriptions of each course, specific times, locations, age groups and costs, Brewer suggested downloading a brochure from the FEEF website, or calling 251-990-FEEF (3333) for more information.

Brewer said several of the camps are first-time offerings for the academy and are “true enrichment opportunities that are not available otherwise.”

Others, she said, are simply extensions of programs offered throughout the school year via FEEF grants, including the music video, chess and iPads camps.

“We are thrilled with the creativity being shown by the Summer Enrichment faculty, and can’t wait to have the students experience these great camps.”
