FAIRHOPE, Alabama — The Fairhope Pirates did all they could to leave Friday's second round playoff game with a victory. A fake punt, a fake field goal, and another good night for senior quarterback Nate Andrews were not enough as Carver-Montgomery beat the Pirates 20-16.

The Pirates had the ball, perhaps one more first down away from sealing the win, before the Wolverine defense came up with a big stop.

Senior quarterback and Division 1 prospect Jeremy Johnson led the visiting Wolverines from Carver-Montgomery down the filed in the final minute for a game winning touchdown.

“It was defiantly a tough game to lose. Any time you lose in the playoffs, and it's your seniors last game it's going to be disappointing,” Fairhope head coach Adam Winegarden said. “I am very proud of my team. Our team has battled all year it could have gone our way tonight but it didn’t.”

Although the Pirates gave up some big plays in the game they only surrendered 13 points heading into the final minute when Johnson led the Wolverines on a highlight reel drive.

“He is a good player; he is being looked at by many schools for a reason,” Winegarden said. “He is a good quarterback but we played good enough on defense to win tonight. I thought we played well tonight overall we just didn’t make the plays that we needed to.”

After missing on his first pass attempt Johnson would wind up completing his next 8 passes and finished the game 16-26 through the air with more than 240 yards.

“He makes plays for us. What a great job and a career he has had at Carver high school,” Carver head coach Billy Gresham said. “Somehow he figured out how to make plays for us and we appreciated it.”

Not to be out done Andrews put a cap on a great career with the Pirates with another great performance. The running quarterback finished the game with more than 140 yards on 26 carries.

The game started quickly for the Wolverines as their first two possessions led to points giving them an early 10-0 lead over the Pirates on a 35-yard field goal by sophomore Nagee Clay and a 15-yard rushing touchdown for senior Camdon Foster.

The 10-0 lead held up until early in the second quarter.

The Pirates were lining up for a field goal attempt before four straight dead ball penalties (2 on each team) led to a fake field goal attempt for the Pirates.

The attempt was successful as sophomore Jacob Fuqua hauled in a 7-yard touchdown pass on the fake field goal attempt cutting the Pirates deficit to 10-6 as they missed the extra point.

The Pirates took the lead two possessions later on a 4-yard touchdown run by Andrews giving them their first lead of the game.

With the game tied at 13 midway through the fourth quarter Pirate kicker John Baxter gave the Pirates a 16-13 lead.

On a third down play with just over two minutes remaining in the game the Pirates had a chance to ice the game with one more first down. Unfortunately for the Pirates and their fans they came up one yard shy giving the Wolverines the ball with 2:04 remaining.

Johnson and the Wolverines took possession of the ball on their own 40 with just over 2:00 remaining.

Five plays later and with under 25 seconds remaining Johnson hit junior receiver Landy Capetillo on a high fade jump ball in the back corner of the end zone giving them the win 20-16 win over the Pirates.

With the loss the Pirates finish with a record of 8-4 including postseason play.

With the win the Wolverine advance in the Alabama 6A playoffs to play Spain Park in Montgomery next Friday night.
