Fairhope falls to Davidson in OT

MOBILE, Ala. – Two failed extra-points and a failed two-point conversion by the Fairhope Pirates allowed the Davidson Warriors to stay within striking distance and eventually win Friday night 35-28 in overtime, ending the Pirates' playoff run.

If not for the mistakes in the kicking game, the Pirates would have led Davidson 31-21 in the final quarter, but the score was 28-21 when the Warriors took over possession at their 20 with only 5:30 to play in the game. Davidson went on a 13-play drive capped by a 19-yard touchdown pass from Kendall Williamson to Rashaad Cunningham with only 21 seconds left. Fairhope had their chances to stop Davidson on the drive, with two fourth-and-three plays that the Warriors converted for first downs.

Davidson took possession of the ball first in overtime and scored on a 5-yard touchdown run by Williamson. The Pirates were held to a fourth-and-five on their possession, and Fairhope quarterback Chase Domino could not escape the pressure and was brought down for a sack to end the game.

Domino threw for three touchdowns, ran for one touchdown and totaled 230 yards passing with one interception. Two of the touchdowns and 183 yards went to wide receiver Nate Andrews, and the combination gave the Davidson defense fits all night, connecting seven times, all of which came in the second and third quarters.

“It seemed like every time we needed a play, Chase to Nate seemed to be the combination,” Fairhope Head Coach David Faulkner said after the game. “Time and time again they connected and got us out of holes and kept drives alive for us.”

The duo first connected for a score with 44 seconds left in the first half on a 21-yard strike to give Fairhope a 16-7 lead. The ensuing extra point attempt was blocked.

Davidson then went on a three-play, 56-yard drive to score with only seven seconds remaining to cut the lead to 16-14 at halftime.

The Warriors scored a touchdown to open the second-half scoring, but Fairhope responded with a big kick-off return down to the Davidson 40. Three plays later, Domino found Andrews for a 40-yard touchdown pass to give Fairhope a 22-21 lead.

Hoping to get ahead by a field goal margin, Faulkner elected to go for two points, but the Domino pass was wide of its’ intended target and Fairhope held a one-point lead.

Fairhope scored again with 10:51 left in the game on a 15-yard pass from Domino to wide receiver Elias Pettis in the corner of the end zone. On the ensuing extra point attempt, the snap and hold was botched and Fairhope had a 28-21 lead.

Faulkner chose not to speak about the kicking-game mistakes, but he did have high praise for his players after the game.

“I’m really impressed with the courage that we showed and the amount of fight that we showed,” he said. “It wasn’t in the cards tonight.”

Running back Tanner Martin contributed 91 yards rushing on offense, and Nick Cutrone, Fairhope’s kicker, was good on a 32-yard attempt in the second quarter to give Fairhope a 10-0 lead.

Williamson had 179 all-purpose yards, including two touchdown passes and a touchdown run, and running back Terrance Timmons had 199 yards rushing and one touchdown to lead the Davidson offense.

"The biggest thing that I regret is this is going to be the last time that we are going to have this team ever," Faulkner said to his team after the game.
