POINT CLEAR, Ala. — The Lady Pirates of Fairhope finished third in the team division and Marie Cain of Baldwin County High was second individually in the girls Class 6A Section 1 golf tournament at Lakewood Golf Club in Point Clear on Monday.
Cain shot a 76, just a stroke, behind Prattville’s Taylor Appleyard who medaled at 75. As one of the top four individuals, Cain will advance to the sub-state round at Heron Lakes next Tuesday.
The Lady Pirates’ team score of 284 bested fourth-place Baker’s 291 as second-place Alma Bryant shot a 248, five off of Appleyard’s Lady Lions who won the section crown with a 243. The top four teams advanced to sub-state. Fairhope coach David Stapleton was pleased with the results which advanced his youthful team to the sub-state round.
“We are thrilled they are moving on to sub-state,” he said. “Some of our young girls really pulled through well for us. I thought it was a great day for both our boys and girls teams and we are looking forward to next Tuesday.”
FHS was led by sophomore Anna Grace Claunch who shot 90 for the first time in 18-hole competition. It was five strokes off her previous best.
“I just relaxed, thought about each shot and took my time,” she said. “I am usually rushed, but I decided to take my time. I think I can do better. My drives were good but my chipping wasn't very good.”
Claunch added that she was proud of how the whole team settled down and played with Prattville, Bryant and Baker.
“I am really proud of us. We were all very nervous at first but we just had to relax and take it hole-by-hole. I am really proud of our outcome and I know we can do better and improve.”
Claunch’s teammates included Alex Gressett who shot a 95, Sidney White with a 99 and Melissa Johnson who had a 114 for the Lady Pirates.
Individual Section 1 qualifiers from Fairhope Courtney Kennedy shot a 96 and Jasmine Wallace shot a 101.
Other local individual Section 1 qualifiers included Alex Gomez (97) and Hayley Clark (103) of Daphne.
