BAY MINETTE, Ala. — A Baldwin County Corrections Center inmate who received a mental health evaluation in February apparently hanged himself in his cell Sunday, launching a criminal and internal investigation, according to the Baldwin County Sheriff’s Office.

The body of Zachary Lamar Barber, 19, of Lowry Lane in Fairhope, was discovered about 6 a.m. during routine cell checks, according to a press release. He was alone in his cell at the time of his death.

The Baldwin County Sheriff’s Office, the Baldwin County District Attorney’s Office, the Foley Police Department and the Baldwin County Coroner’s Office are conducting a death investigation, while the Sheriff’s Office is conduction an internal affairs investigation.

Paramedics were called, but attempts to save Barber were unsuccessful. Barber’s body was transported to the state Department of Forensic Sciences for autopsy.

Barber was incarcerated Feb. 24, after being evaluated by the Alabama Mental Health Department in Searcy, the press release stated. Barber was sent to Searcy after being charged with domestic violence-menacing, reckless endangerment, disorderly conduct, first-degree kidnapping, and first-degree robbery involving a machete.

Barber was being held in lieu of a $107,500 bail.
