Fairhope mayor addresses Chamber

DAPHNE, Alabama— On Tuesday the Eastern Shore Chamber of Commerce presented “Eggs N’ Issues” with spokespeople from Daphne, Fairhope and Spanish Fort.

Only one of the three mayors was able to make it to the presentation, Mayor Tim Kant of Fairhope. Daphne Mayor Bailey Yelding had an emergency come up said the Chamber spokesperson. Spanish Fort Mayor Mike McMillan was unable to make the appearance because he had to be in court for the city that day.

Each of the missing mayors sent proxies to the meeting instead. Richard Johnson, director of Public Works, stood in for Yelding, while Spanish Fort Councilwoman Mary Brabner stood in for McMillan.

Kant, Johnson and Brabner each gave presentations about what is going on in their cities.

Kant spoke to the audience about recreation in Fairhope and how the city hopes to expand it. Kant said recreation was a top priority in the city. Kant also talked about health in the community and wanting to make Fairhope a healthier city.

“I include myself in that,” Kant said. “After the new year I hope to get healthier with the city.”

Johnson told the audience of Chamber members about the Eastern Shore Metropolitan Planning Organization and how that helps foster relationships between the cities. The MPO directs transportation funds the Eastern Shore receives and what projects those dollars will be spent on.

“The cities and the county have to work together to decide what will be the best thing for the Eastern Shore area,” Johnson said.

Brabner talked about the new city hall Spanish Fort broke ground on recently. The 33,000 square-foot facility will house city hall, a library and a senior center. The new complex will cost about $7.8 million, said Brabner. The city saved about $3 million to get the project started and to reduce the amount that will have to be borrowed. Brabner said they plan to add on to the complex to include a fishing pond behind City Hall and buildings to house public works and other city departments.

“Last but not least I’d like to point out we are the 5A state football champions,” Brabner said. “But we aren’t just state champions; I like to say we are Eastern Shore champions as well. Because we beat both Daphne and Fairhope.”
