MOBILE — The offense and special teams provided the points, and the defense sealed another high-scoring win for Fairhope here Friday night when the Pirates claimed a 35-28 win over UMS-Wright in the Bulldogs’ E.E. Delaney Stadium.
Daniel Megginson’s pass interception in the final half-minute turned back the Bulldogs’ game-tying bid after Fairhope went ahead for the last time with 8:54 to play on Jamal Woodyard’s 6-yard run. Woodyard, for the second time in the game, took a direct snap from center and skirted right end for his third TD of the game.
Benjamin Clester kicked his fifth extra point to close out the scoring.
The game was a seesaw scoring fest from the beginning, with a few good defensive plays mixed in along the way. The Bulldogs intercepted three passes off sophomore Fairhope quarterback Daryl Norris, who completed 21 of 33 passes for 180 yards and two touchdowns.
UMS-Wright jumped ahead early on an 11-yard touchdown run by fullback Bill Davis on the eighth play of a 74-yard drive on the game’ first possession. Austin Hilyer kicked the first of his four extra points with 7:44 left in the first quarter.
Fairhope answered right back with a 43-yard scoring drive after Woodyard returned the kickoff 52 yards. Woodyard scored from a yard out seven plays later. The drive was aided by two penalties against the Bulldogs.
Clester’s PAT tied the score with 4:48 left in the first quarter.
Davis scored again on a 7-yard run with 8:43 left in the second quarter to put the hosts back ahead. Three possessions later Fairhope, with the aid of three penalties in three snaps against UMS-Wright, covered 60 yards in five plays to tie the score again when Woodyard took a screen pass from Norris and scored from 2 yards out 3:39 before halftime.
Zackary Snyder gave Fairhope its first lad when he returned the second-half kickoff 85 yards up the west sideline for a touchdown. UMS-Wright retaliated with a 69-yard scoring drive, tying the game on Ben Dickey’s 11-yard run and Hilyer’s extra point.
The Pirates answered right back with an 80-yard drive to Norris’ 16-yard TD pass to Tylin Williams, the the Bulldogs went 55 yards to even the count again when quarterback William Harvey scrambled out of the pocket and rambled 31 yards for a touchdown on the first play of the fourth quarter.
Undaunted, Norris and the FHS offense covered 70 yards in five plays to get Woodyard’s eventual game-winning touchdown.
Woodyard finished with 38 yards rushing on six carries and also caught nine passes for 76 yards. Harvey completed 14 of 28 passes for 142 yards and Dickey rushed for 133 yards on 22 carries for UMS-Wright.
The non-regional win pushed 6A Fairhope’s record back above .500 at 3-2 while UMS-Wright dropped to 1-4. The Pirates host LeFlore in a Region 2 game Friday night in Fairhope while the Bulldogs take on 5A Region 1 power Williamson in Delaney Stadium.
