FAIRHOPE, Alabama — Seems like old times. Both 6A Area 3 playoff teams advanced to the second round of the state playoffs last weekend meaning the old Blue-and-Gold rivalry between Fairhope and Foley gets to go one more round in baseball.
The Area 3 champion Fairhope Pirates swept Enterprise in round one and the Area 3 runner-up Foley Lions defeated Northview in three games over an extended weekend. The Pirates (28-8) will host Foley (27-11) Friday in a doubleheader at Volanta Park starting at 4:30 p.m. The series will continue, if necessary, with a deciding game on Saturday at 2 p.m.
Fairhope coach Stu Fuller said it was good to be hosting the next round.
“I’m happy we’ll be home of course,” he said. “But we have our work cut out for us. Foley is playing so well lately under (first-year) coach (Steve) Garrett. So it’s going to be a tough, hard-fought series. They compete hard and down to the wire and as usual it will come down to who makes the fewest mistakes. They made a few too many mistakes the last time we met, but they have definitely corrected some of that in the later part of the season.”
Fairhope swept the area series with the Lions in March, 7-1, 13-3.
“But the main thing for us right now,” Fuller said, “Is to just focus on what we can do and not what the other team can do. I’m encouraged by how much better we swung the bats last weekend against Enterprise. So we have been focusing on being aggressive at the plate but still disciplined. So we will need to keep playing solid defense and limit any damage we can with good pitching and of course pound the ball as much as possible.”
How they got here: The Foley Lions beat the Northview Cougars in a dramatic three-game series. In the third and final game on Monday in Dothan, Foley got solo home runs from Maison Taylor and Stormm Garrett to close out the series with a 2-0 win. Freshman pitcher Taylor Gibson pitched a complete game to pick up the win for the Lions.
Fairhope swept Enterprise in a first-round double header on a rainy Friday at Volanta Park.
