GULF SHORES, Alabama — Fairhope swept the Baldwin County high school track meet Tuesday in Gulf Shores. The Pirates won the boys and girls team events with many high scoring top-three finishes including several first-place marks.
The Lady Pirates collected 225 county-title points to finish ahead of Spanish Fort’s 155 and Daphne’s third-place 115. Foley, Baldwin County and Robertsdale rounded out the field. Fairhope won the boys championship with a tighter margin 162-134 over Foley while Daphne edged Spanish Fort 121-117 for third. BCHS was fifth with Gulf Shores and Robertsdale bringing in the scoring.
Pydrae Carroll won four events for the Pirates including the long jump, triple jump, 110 and 300 high hurdles. The Lady Pirates won many of their points in the field events including Kayla Dortch in the shot put, Jessica Dailey in the discus and Megan Midkiff in the high jump.
Spanish Fort senior Jackie Smith took first in the girls javelin, the 800, ran the anchor in the Lady Toros’ 4 X 400 relay victory and claimed a bronze in the shot. Lady Toro Lauren Davis won the 100, 200 and was second in the 400. She also ran a leg in the 4 X 400 win. Katrina Garofano and Aren Valerie ran the other 4 X 400 legs. The Daphne team of Portia Jones, Amber Yelding, Brittany McConico and Sierra Patterson combined to win the 4 X 100 relay for the Lady Trojans.
The Toros had five top-three finishes in the throws events with Marcus Walton and Chris Morehouse going 1-and-2 in the javelin. The Lions’ Tyrin Pugh and D’Marsjae Casey dominated the short sprints while the Pirates dominated the 800 and distance events including a 1-2-3 sweep in 1600 by Shawn Hinton, Jordan McKnight and Richard Zimmerman.
Fairhope’s Thomas Grace won the 800 and came in second to SFHS' Michael Conniff in the 400.
The top 5A and 6A teams and individuals qualified for advancement to the Section 1 meet at the Mcgill-Toolen Catholic High on-campus facility April 27-28.
