FAIRHOPE, Alabama —The Pirates scored at least one run in nine straight innings while holding the visiting Yellow Jackets to only one for both games as Fairhope swept McGill-Toolen Catholic 10-0 and 9-1 in round one of the 6A state baseball playoff series.
Fairhope (31-6) will host Baldwin County (26-12) in the second round beginning April 27.
Chase Domino hit his sixth home run of the year and the third grand slam of his career in the top of the first inning of the second game to spot the Pirates (visitors in game two) a 4-0 lead before the Jackets came to the plate. Brock Gilheart, Jerrod Hathcock and brother Justin Hathcock also homered for Fairhope in the series.
Pirate pitching by Toby Thomas and Ethan Hunt (both now 8-0 on the year) held the Area 4 runners-up to a total of three hits through 13 innings.
In the final game, Hunt gave up one-hit and struck out 11 batters. Hunter Ellenburg delivered a pair of RBI hits and Beacher Faust singled twice and scored for Fairhope to add to the long balls by Domino and Justin Hathcock and Gilheart who went back-to-back yard in the third.
In the first game, Thomas threw a two-hit shutout and struck out nine strikeouts with no walks. The game ended on Jerrod Hathcock's two-run, walk-off homer in the sixth. The younger Hathcock caught both games and went 3-for-4 with four RBIs. Senior Justin Hathcock and designated hitter Taylor Gradle each added two RBIs. Andrew Mahoney (4-6) took the loss.
Alex Bessonen reached for McGill-Toolen in the third with an RBI triple to spoil Hunt's no-hitter. David Mosley suffered the loss for the young Jackets (seven junior starters) who upset the Pirates in the second round last year.
