FAIRHOPE, Alabama—Runners from Baldwin County and the surrounding area now have a new race this weekend to challenge their ability—and support efforts to fight drug and alcohol addiction.
“It’s About The Shirt” is a 5K, half-marathon and marathon that is being put on in Fairhope this Sunday Sept. 30. The course will take participants through the beautiful streets of Fairhope and along Scenic 98 with the start and finish happening at the Fairhope Pier.
“It’s About the Shirt” was organized to raise money for drug and alcohol addiction, according to its website. The name of the race is based on a competition for local design of the T-shirt, one which will be worn long after the race is over.
Dan and Stacy Sloan, race directors, decided they wanted to do something to raise awareness and money for drug addiction after having a family member go through the rehabilitation process.
Stacy Sloan says they found an inpatient facility called Teen Challenge.
“Teen Challenge is a faith-based facility that rehabs all types of addictions,” she said. “It is a 12- to 18- month residential program that changes not only the person to live drug free, but they help change their mindset to be able to make good decisions once they re-enter society. They survive solely on donations and like most facilities they struggle to make ends meet.”
Dan and Stacy are not new to organizing races or running, and they thought this would be a great way to help out something that has become very near and dear to their heart.
“At first it was difficult to arrange, but Chief Bill Press was a great supporter,” she said. “The Fairhope Police are very willing to support anything to get people off drugs and make our town a better place.” The marathon and half-marathon will start at 7 a.m. with the 5K following at 7:30. All races will begin at the Fairhope Pier.
There will be awards for the top male and female finishers and also age group awards. All marathon and half-marathon finishers will receive a metal for their accomplishments.
All participants that are registered will receive a race shirt that was designed by a local resident.
Registration is open until September 29 through active.com. For more information, visit www.itsabouttheshirt.com.
