A sewage spill of about 1,000 gallons occurred Sunday in Fairhope due to an electrical failure at a lift station south of Morphy Avenue, according to a Feb. 7 Baldwin County Health Department news release.
The electrical failure caused a manhole to overflow and discharge approximately 1,000 gallons of sewage into Fly Creek, which empties into Cowpen Creek, according to the release.
The health department advised caution if using those bodies of water for recreational purposes and said to thoroughly cook any fish or seafood caught nearby and to wash hands after handling.
