BAY MINETTE, Alabama — The Fairhope Pirates survived six turnovers at Simmons Field in Bay Minette and shut out Baldwin County High 30-0 Friday night in 6A Region 2. The Pirates improved to 2-1 in region play, 3-1 overall while the BCHS Tigers will move on to week five still looking for win one at 0-4.
FHS got around five lost fumbles and an interception in part by creating ball-control problems for the Tigers as both teams' aggressive play forced turnovers in both directions.
"We feel very fortunate," said Fairhope coach David Faulkner. "We did better in the second half. Came out with the attitude that it was a zero, zero game again and to just win the second half.
"Tried to stay in the aggressive mode and did a better job of keeping hold of the ball. Baldwin County played a good game and coach (Bobby) Moore is doing a tremendous job of getting things turned around for them and I think he will have them where they want to be pretty soon."
Moore was upbeat despite the outcome, particularly because of the play of his defense. "Defense played really well but we turned it over too much when we got it. Fairhope has a good team, especially on offense. Great quarterback, big line out front. But, I'm proud of how we came back out the second half and kept them back most of the time. I thought Lee (Atchison) ran the ball well for us. Have some injuries that are not helping us out much, but we got guys ready to step up. They just need a little more time, playing time. We're making progress. A win wasn't there tonight, but it will come."
Tanner Martin capped a 59-yard Fairhope drive with a 1-yard TD run with 4:21 left in the first quarter and Nick Cutrone added the extra point to start the scoring. In the second period: Cutrone picked off a Nate Jones pass and returned it 41 yards for an FHS TD, Chase Domino threw a 36-yard TD pass to Nate Andrews and the Pirates picked up a safety just before the half to lead 23-0. Domino later scrambled for an 8-yard TD on the first play of the fourth quarter to finish a 67-yard drive for the final score.
Domino went 12-for-17 in the air passing for 140 yards with one interception. On the ground, the Pirates used Bryan Bell, Brent McDonald, Devin Odom as well as Martin and Domino to rush for 159 yards with Bell and Martin getting most of the carries. Stephen Pierce had an interception for the Pirates.
Atchison led the Tigers with 98 yards rushing for the Tigers. Lorenzo Fields had an interception.
BCHS travels to Spanish Fort Friday while Fairhope will host St. Paul’s Friday. Kickoffs are at 7 p.m.
