POINT CLEAR, Alabama — It was a Blue and Gold and Green sweep — individually — in the 6A boys and girls Section 1 golf matches at Lakewood in Point Clear on Monday.
Fairhope Pirate Alex Green shot a 72 and his Lady Pirate sister Virginia a 71 to take the medalists awards with the lowest single scores among all the 6A schools from Baldwin and Mobile counties.
Alex, a freshman, led his team to the boys section title while Virginia, a Fairhope Middle School seventh grader, helped Fairhope High’s girls qualify for the sub-state meet with a runner-up finish in the team standings. The first four teams and top four individual, not on a qualifying team, advance to the next round.
The younger Green had a hat-trick of bogeys but made five birdies to record her best finish to date, a win accented by outscoring her big brother for the first time.
“It feels good to get this,” she said of the medalist’s trophy. “My approach shots were really good today, that helped. But I feel bad we (the team) didn’t win. But we still made it to sub-state so that’s good. (And) it was fun to beat my brother. Never beat him before ever. He’ll get over it, though. Probably win the next time we play. He usually does.”
Alex, who shot a 67 seven on the same course to win in the county meet two weeks earlier, said his round was more of a struggle than usual.
“To be honest it was kind of frustrating,” he said. “Couldn’t get any putts to fall and some approach shots really didn’t go my way. Greens were in great shape out there today, I just wasn’t reading them very well. But none of us in my group seemed to find a way to make them.”
He was a stroke over par with a 37 at the turn then picked up a birdie down the stretch for the even score which helped secure the team win over McGill-Toolen by five, 300-305.
“It feels good, feels well deserved,” Green added. “We’ve been working hard the last month or so getting ready for sectionals and sub-state and I feel like we have a real shot at winning it.”
He also said he was proud of his baby sister.
“I’m very proud of her. I think that’s her lowest score to date. She’s put in a lot of effort and practice into the game.”
The 2012 Boys and Girls 6A Sub-State round for the teams and individuals advancing from Section 1 will be May 7 at Moore’s Mill Golf Club in Auburn.
